Government Partners Stakeholders to Resume Work on Kejetia Redevelopment Phase II

2 MIN READ

The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, in partnership with the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), has hosted a comprehensive stakeholders’ engagement to outline plans to resume and complete the Kumasi Kejetia Redevelopment Project (Phase II).

The consultative meeting, held at the project site, brought together regional administrators, traditional authorities, transport operators, and traders’ associations to address funding bottlenecks, revenue collection strategies, and execution timelines.

Welcoming delegates on behalf of the sector minister, Mr Mahama Ayariga, the Mayor of Kumasi, Mr Richard Ofori-Agyemang Boadi, disclosed that following high-level consultations with the Ministry of Finance, contractors are scheduled to return to the site in October 2026.

Mr Ofori-Agyemang Boadi emphasised that delivering the flagship infrastructure remains a top priority for His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama to decongest Kumasi’s Central Business District (CBD) and optimise commercial operations across the region.

Addressing financing challenges, the mayor revealed that revenue generated from Phase I currently stands at approximately GH¢89 million—far below initial projections intended to self-finance subsequent phases.

He indicated that moving forward, facility charges will be adjusted to reflect current economic value.

Furthermore, traders were reminded that the initial five-year premium tenure has expired, so tenants with outstanding financial obligations have been directed to settle all arrears by December 31, 2026, to avoid forfeiting their shop allocations.

Reaffirming the Regional Coordinating Council’s support, the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, designated the market complex as a crucial economic hub for the region, assuring transport operators and market women of the government’s resolve to deliver a modern, fully functional facility.

Representing the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Oheneba Owusu Afriyie IV (Otumfuo Apagyahene) urged occupants to honour their premium obligations to facilitate project continuity.

He further charged administrators to maintain strict transparency and non-partisanship during shop allocations.

Presenting the technical overview, Project Consultant Mr Tony Asare Yeboah of Avargade Design Services detailed that the four-level structure will accommodate 10,528 trading units alongside essential public services.
