BACKGROUND OF ISD
The Information Services Department (ISD) evolved from an organization established in the late part of 1939 as a branch of the Colonial Government Secretariat purposely to convey news on the 2nd World War to the people of Gold Coast. This was done through the production of a weekly bulletin dubbed the "Empire at War".
It was later transformed into the Public Relations Department and finally the Information Services Department. Over the years, it has remained the central communications agency of the government, bridging the communication gap between the government and the governed.
After the return to constitutional rule, the department continues to play a vital role in national development by executing public education campaigns and assessing public reaction to government policies.
PROFILE OF ISD
The Information Services Department (ISD) is the principal public relations outfit of the Government of Ghana. It exists to create awareness on government policies, programmes and activities and provides feedback to the government.
The Mandate is guided by the following legislative and regulatory frameworks:
- 1992 Constitution of Ghana
- Civil Service Act, 1993 (PNDCL 327)
- Right to Information Act 2019 (Act 989)
- Civil Service (Amendment) Act 2001
- Local Government Act, 1993 (Act 462)
The Department functions under the Ministry of Information and operates at the National, Regional, and District levels across the country to ensure effective grassroots communication.
