National Ambulance Service Tests Emergency Response Readiness in Airport Disaster Simulation
The National Ambulance Service (NAS) has joined key national institutions in a full-scale emergency simulation at the Accra International Airport to assess preparedness for aviation disasters and strengthen coordination among emergency response agencies.
Organised on Thursday by the Ghana Airports Company Limited, the exercise tested the readiness of participating institutions to respond to potential aviation emergencies, including incidents involving multiple casualties.
NAS emergency medical crews demonstrated their ability to respond swiftly and professionally to simulated mass-casualty situations, highlighting the importance of pre-hospital emergency care in providing timely treatment and saving lives during aviation-related emergencies.
The exercise also allowed participating agencies to assess response times, test existing emergency plans, identify operational gaps and determine areas requiring improvement. Observations from the simulation will inform efforts to refine emergency response procedures and improve coordination among the institutions involved.
Several national institutions participated in the exercise, including the Aircraft Accident Investigation and Prevention Bureau (AIB), the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and the Interior, intelligence and defence agencies, the Board of Airline Representatives, aviation security personnel, the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana National Fire Service, alongside other emergency response partners.
For NAS, participation in the simulation forms part of its commitment to maintaining operational readiness, delivering effective emergency medical care and working closely with partner institutions to ensure a coordinated response when disasters occur.
The Service emphasised the importance of regular preparedness exercises in strengthening emergency response systems, noting that effective coordination and timely intervention are critical to saving lives during emergencies.
