Procurement of 100 New Ambulances Included in 2027 Budget – President Mahama
President John Dramani Mahama has announced that Government will procure 100 new ambulances under the 2027 Budget to replace broken-down emergency vehicles across the country.
The President made the announcement during the Upper West Community Engagement while responding to concerns about emergency healthcare and ambulance shortages.
He said many of the existing ambulances had become non-functional and would be replaced to improve emergency medical response at the district and constituency levels.
“Districts and constituencies with non-functional ambulances will receive replacements under this programme,” he said.
President Mahama linked the ambulance initiative to Government’s broader healthcare reforms, which include the recently launched Free Primary Healthcare Programme and the Ghana Medical Trust Fund.
He explained that while primary healthcare now provides free diagnosis, treatment and medicines at CHPS compounds, health centres and polyclinics, emergency transport remains critical for patients requiring referral to higher-level facilities.
The President also announced plans to expand cancer treatment services beyond Accra and Kumasi, noting that Ghana currently has only two major public oncology centres alongside one private facility.
He said Government intends to establish additional oncology centres to reduce the burden on patients who travel long distances for specialised treatment.
Responding to a case raised by a traditional leader, President Mahama directed that the patient’s details be forwarded to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund for assessment and possible support.
He said the Fund was created to protect families from catastrophic medical expenses associated with illnesses such as cancer, kidney failure, heart disease and stroke.
President Mahama reaffirmed Government’s commitment to strengthening emergency healthcare through improved ambulance services, expanded specialised treatment and wider access to affordable healthcare across the country.
