Sierra Leone Explores Ghana’s Port Operations

The Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has received the Sierra Leonean Minister for Fisheries and Marine Resources, Mrs Princess Dugba to discuss collaboration and knowledge-sharing in the maritime sector.

During the visit, the Minister noted the importance of African countries sharing expertise and working together to address common development challenges, particularly in transport and port infrastructure.

He said the visit is important because it creates an opportunity for both countries to learn from each other and adopt good practices and policies.

Mr Nikpe led the delegation to the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority for them to learn first-hand the operations and management of the Port.

Mrs Dugba explained that Sierra Leone is developing its first industrial fishing port, a $55 million project funded by the Chinese government is expected to be completed within two years.

“The project comprises a jetty, marine house, waste management, and a fish market. The industrial fishing port is expected to help Sierra Leone tap into the blue economy, create jobs, and reduce losses in the fishing sector,” she said.

She added that Ghana’s long experience in port operations would provide valuable lessons to help Sierra Leone manage the project effectively and maximise its benefits.

She further noted that the visit would enable Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Fisheries to identify potential areas of technical cooperation and knowledge‑sharing with Ghana.

The delegation included Sierra Leone’s Deputy Minister for Fisheries and Marine Resources, Ahmed Saybom Kanu, and Sierra Leone’s Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Mohammed Hassan Kaisamba.
