Agbogloshie Urban Land Renewal Project: Industrial Park to Replace Waste Heaps
The government has announced plans to transform Agbogloshie in Accra into an Industrial Park after the waste evacuation exercise.
President John Dramani Mahama said the land that will be reclaimed and recovered after the exercise will be used for the Industrial Park.
He said the objective is to remove a longstanding public health hazard and create conditions for lasting improvements.
President Mahama announced the plan on Friday, during the commissioning of the evacuation of one million tonnes of waste from Agbogloshie to the Adepa Engineered Landfill Site near Nsawam in the Eastern Region.
“When we have cleared this garbage, the land that will be reclaimed and recovered is going to be an Industrial Park,” he said.
The President noted that clearing the site would make way for the proposed Agbogloshie Urban Land Renewal Project.
He said the exercise forms part of a broader programme to transform the area and create conditions for lasting improvements.
He said the operation would end the open dumping and burning that had endangered lives and damaged the surrounding environment for far too long.
He noted that the evacuated waste would be transported to the Adepa Engineered Landfill for control, disposal, compaction and covering with appropriate environmental safeguards.
The exercise is being carried out by the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs in collaboration with the Ghana Armed Forces and the District Road Improvement Project, with funding support from the Ministry of Finance and the District Assemblies Common Fund.
Heavy equipment secured under the District Road Improvement Programme, including tipper trucks, excavators, bulldozers and wheel loaders, is being deployed for the operation.
The President said government is putting its own capacity to work to confront the longstanding national challenge.
The entire operation is expected to be completed within 90 days. President Mahama said the entire operation from evacuation, excavation, loading, transportation and final disposal must be managed responsibly.
To the people of Old Fadama and Agbogloshie, the President said the operation was being undertaken for their health, their dignity and their children’s future.
He asked them to cooperate with the military personnel, the DRIP operators and assembly teams as they carried out the demanding work in the coming weeks.
