President Mahama Orders Formation of Inter-Agency Task Force to Combat Drug Trafficking

President John Dramani Mahama has directed the establishment of an inter-agency task force to develop a national roadmap for preventing the trafficking of narcotic drugs through Ghana’s borders.

The task force has been given two weeks to submit detailed recommendations aimed at strengthening border security and closing operational gaps exploited by drug trafficking networks.

Its report will consolidate proposals from the country’s security agencies into a coordinated implementation plan to prevent the movement of illicit drugs through Ghana’s ports and border entry points.

The directive was issued on Thursday at the Presidency in Accra when President Mahama chaired an urgent meeting of security chiefs to review investigations into recent cases of narcotic trafficking through the country’s ports.

During the meeting, the President received a detailed briefing on the progress of investigations and the measures already taken by the security agencies in response to the incidents.

Security chiefs informed the President that 10 individuals, including four officers of the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), are currently being held while investigations continue.

The meeting also reviewed the structure and security systems governing operations at Ghana’s ports and assessed existing enforcement mechanisms aimed at detecting and preventing narcotics trafficking.
