Director-General of Prisons Urges Judges to Uphold Fairness in Judgments

The Director-General of Prisons, Mrs. Patience Baffoe-Bonnie (Esq.), has urged judges of the Judicial Service to uphold fairness and impartiality in their judgments.

Delivering a lecture on Monday at the Law Court Complex in Accra, she reminded them to be guided by justice rather than the social or economic status of individuals who appear before them.

Her presentation, titled “When the Gavel Falls,” provided valuable insights into the core mandates of the Ghana Prisons Service, which include the safe custody, welfare, reformation, and rehabilitation of inmates.

Mrs. Baffoe-Bonnie also highlighted the Service’s new transformational agenda, the “Think Prisons 360 Degrees” initiative which aims to modernize and reposition the Ghana Prisons Service as a world-class, humane, and development-oriented institution.

She noted that the initiative is anchored on five strategic pillars including the welfare of officers and inmates, agricultural mechanization, industrialization and prison business development, wealth creation, strategic relations and partnerships to drive special initiatives and interventions.

The Director-General emphasized the complexities of life within the prison system, shedding light on the realities faced by inmates. She highlighted ongoing efforts to ensure humane treatment and effective rehabilitation, reinforcing the importance of a supportive environment for inmates’ reintegration into society.
