IGP Urges Okada Riders to Prioritise Road Safety
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has urged commercial motorcycle riders, popularly known as Okada riders, to prioritise road safety and ensure strict compliance with road traffic regulations to help reduce road crashes.
He said proper training in safe riding practices and regular education of riders on responsible road use were essential to promoting safety and protecting lives on the country’s roads.
The IGP made the call when he, together with members of the Police Management Board (POMAB), engaged the leadership of the Okada Riders Association of Ghana (ORAG) to discuss their concerns and strengthen collaboration between the Association and the Ghana Police Service.
Mr Yohuno encouraged the Association to take a proactive role in educating its members on safe riding practices and the need to comply with road traffic regulations.
He also urged Okada riders to ensure that they were properly identified and registered, while complying with all licensing and motorbike registration requirements.
He assured the riders that the Police Administration would continue to engage them and work towards addressing their concerns to strengthen cooperation between the two sides.
The IGP said sustained engagement with the Association was important in building mutual understanding and supporting efforts to improve road safety and security.
Responding, the President of ORAG, Mr Michael Kofi Owusu, expressed the Association’s willingness to collaborate with the Ghana Police Service to improve the operations of its members.
He said ORAG was prepared to support efforts to promote road safety and reduce crime, while working with the Police to address issues affecting its members.
