Ghana Police Service to Begin Automated Traffic Law Enforcement from October 1

The Ghana Police Service has announced the commencement of the full implementation of its automated traffic law enforcement programme, TRAFFITECH-GH, from October 1, as part of efforts to improve discipline and compliance on the country’s roads.

Implemented through the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), the programme seeks to strengthen the enforcement of road traffic laws and regulations through the use of technology.

According to a press release issued on Tuesday, TRAFFITECH-GH will deploy cameras and Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) devices to detect traffic offences and support enforcement activities.

“Under the system, offences detected through the automated enforcement mechanisms will be reviewed before Electronic Notices of Violation (ENV) are issued to vehicle owners or drivers,” the statement read.

The Service said the notice would be sent via SMS and would provide details of the offence committed, as well as the prescribed fine.

The Police Service said the initiative formed part of broader efforts to address indiscipline on Ghana’s roads and promote compliance with road traffic laws and regulations.

It urged motorists, drivers and vehicle owners to comply with traffic regulations and support the implementation of TRAFFITECH-GH.

The Service further said adherence to traffic regulations and the effective implementation of the programme would contribute to safer roads and help reduce road traffic crashes and casualties.

The Police Service encouraged members of the public to familiarise themselves with the TRAFFITECH-GH system ahead of the commencement of its full implementation.
