Sunyani Central Prison Commissions Skills Development Centre for Inmates
The Sunyani Central Prison has commissioned a Car Wash and Vulcanising Skills Development Centre to equip inmates with practical vocational skills and prepare them for successful reintegration into society after their release.
The facility, commissioned last Friday forms part of the Ghana Prisons Service’s Think Prisons 360 Degrees initiative, which focuses on rehabilitation, skills development, empowerment and reintegration.
The project was made possible through the support of Chief Executive Officer of Erikama Enterprise, Eric Kumi whose contribution facilitated the establishment of the centre.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Officer-in-Charge of Sunyani Central Prison and Regional Commander for Bono, Ahafo and Bono East Regions, Director of Prisons (DOP) Thompson Otsyokpo, commended Mr. Kumi for supporting inmate rehabilitation through skills development.
He noted that such interventions provide inmates with opportunities to acquire employable skills that can help them earn a living and become productive members of society upon their release.
DOP Otsyokpo also acknowledged GCB Bank for supporting the project through the drilling of a borehole to ensure a reliable water supply for the facility, and expressed appreciation to Madam Mariam Aziz for donating an overhead water storage tank.
Mr. Kumi said his decision to support the project was driven by the desire to contribute to inmate rehabilitation and equip beneficiaries with practical skills for life after prison. He encouraged inmates to remain committed to learning and make good use of the opportunity.
The centre will provide training in car washing, vehicle cleaning and detailing, tyre repairs and other vulcanising services to enable inmates to seek employment or establish their own businesses after their release.
