Vice President Calls for Greater Focus on Learning Outcomes in Basic Schools
The Vice President, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, has urged heads of basic schools across the country to prioritise initiatives that improve pupils’ learning outcomes and strengthen the quality of education.
Speaking at the 5th Quadrennial National Conference of the Conference of Heads of Basic Schools in Koforidua, the Vice President said school leadership plays a critical role in transforming education and ensuring that every child acquires the knowledge, skills and values needed for national development.
She stressed that while expanding access to education remains important, greater attention must be given to improving the quality of teaching and learning so that education policies translate into measurable academic achievement.
Professor Opoku-Agyemang encouraged school heads to embrace innovation, uphold accountability and foster collaboration among teachers and stakeholders to create conducive learning environments for pupils.
She noted that the success of education reforms should be measured by improvements in learners’ performance rather than the number of schools or classrooms established.
During the conference, the National President of the Conference of Heads of Basic Schools, Mr Nicholas Nii Kpakpoe Addo, appealed for equitable distribution of teachers, timely supply of teaching and learning materials and improved welfare for school heads, particularly those serving in rural communities.
Responding to the concerns, the Deputy Minister of Education, Dr. Clement Apaak, assured participants that government remains committed to addressing challenges affecting basic education, including inadequate infrastructure, overcrowded classrooms, shortages of ICT facilities, water, electricity, teacher accommodation and poor road networks.
He reaffirmed government’s commitment to implementing interventions that will improve teaching and learning conditions and enhance educational outcomes for pupils across the country.
