Zoomlion Calls for More Landfill Sites to Address Ghana’s Growing Waste Management Challenges

Zoomlion Ghana Limited has urged Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to invest in the construction of new landfill sites and the expansion of existing ones because improved waste management depends on adequate disposal infrastructure.
The Managing Director of Zoomlion Ghana Limited, Doris Adjei, made the call during a working visit to the Eastern Region, where she met with the Eastern Regional Minister, Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, as part of efforts to assess the company’s operations and engage key stakeholders on sanitation service delivery.
Mrs Adjei noted that while waste collection remains a key component of sanitation management, the shortage of landfill facilities continues to undermine efforts to keep communities clean.
She stressed that expanding landfill capacity would enable Assemblies and waste management companies to dispose of waste more efficiently and improve nationwide environmental sanitation.
She also appealed to the Assemblies to honour their financial commitments to waste management service providers, saying that timely payments are essential for the uninterrupted delivery of sanitation services.
The Eastern Regional Minister acknowledged Zoomlion’s contribution to sanitation despite public criticism in recent years, describing the company as an important partner in the region’s waste management efforts.
Mrs Awatey reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting collaboration with the private sector to tackle sanitation challenges, stressing that sustainable waste management requires coordinated action by government, local authorities, private companies and citizens.
The call comes as many parts of the country continue to grapple with increasing volumes of solid waste, placing renewed attention on the need for adequate landfill infrastructure to support effective sanitation management.
