Government Begins Review of National Employment Policy to Boost Job Creation
The Ministry of Labour, Jobs and Employment has begun a nationwide review of Ghana’s National Employment Policy to address emerging labour market challenges, strengthen skills development and support job creation across the economy.
The exercise began on Tuesday, with the opening of the National Employment Policy Review Data Collection Workshop at the Ministry’s Conference Room in Accra. The workshop brought together representatives of employers’ and workers’ organisations, Ministries, Departments and Agencies, development partners and the International Labour Organisation (ILO).
Opening the workshop on behalf of the Minister for Labour, Jobs and Employment, the Chief Director, Mr Hamidu Adakurugu Esq., said employment remains at the centre of Ghana’s efforts to promote economic growth and reduce poverty.
He said changing economic conditions, technological advances, demographic shifts, climate-related challenges and developments in the global labour market make it necessary to update the current policy.
He said the review would ensure that the National Employment Policy responds to present-day realities and provides a framework for creating more employment opportunities.
Mr Adakurugu explained that the review will assess existing employment interventions, identify legal and policy gaps, improve coordination among institutions and promote sustainable employment opportunities across the country.
He expressed the Ministry’s appreciation to the International Labour Organisation for its continued technical support and commended the lead consultancy team for overseeing the data collection process.
The Ministry expects the nationwide consultations to produce a revised National Employment Policy that supports Ghana’s long-term development goals.
The updated policy will seek to strengthen labour market governance, support enterprise growth, expand social protection and promote productive and decent work for all Ghanaians.
