State funeral for Ambassador James Victor Gbeho slated for July 31
The Government will hold a state funeral for the late Ambassador James Victor Gbeho on Friday, July 31, 2026, in recognition of his distinguished service to Ghana and the international community.
The announcement was made in a press statement signed by the Minister for Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, on Wednesday.
The statement said the state funeral, to be held in collaboration with the Gbeho and related families, would take place at the forecourt of the State House.
Ambassador Gbeho, one of Ghana’s most distinguished statesmen, had a diplomatic career that spanned several decades.
He rose through the ranks of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, serving successively as Chief Director, Deputy Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs.
Beyond his service to Ghana, Ambassador Gbeho served as the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Somalia before becoming President of the ECOWAS Commission, where he contributed to efforts aimed at promoting regional integration, peace and cooperation across West Africa.
The Government said the state funeral was being organised in honour of the late Ambassador’s “stellar national and international service,” reflecting the nation’s appreciation for his enduring contributions to diplomacy and public service.
The statement also conveyed Government’s deepest condolences to the Gbeho family as the nation prepares to bid farewell to one of its most accomplished diplomats and public servants.
