President Mahama Inaugurates Committee to Steer GH¢1bn Bawku Revitalisation Fund
President John Dramani Mahama has inaugurated the committee that will steer the implementation of the GH¢1 billion Bawku Revitalisation Fund.
The Fund, which is aimed at supporting the provision of infrastructure and other development interventions in Bawku and surrounding areas, is expected to help restore the area’s former status as a major commercial centre in Ghana.
The President inaugurated the committee on Wednesday and said the allocation for the Fund had now been made, creating the opportunity for government to begin its implementation following improvements in the security situation.
“With safety and security prevailing in Bawku and the surrounding areas, this is the time to begin the implementation of the Revitalisation Fund,” President Mahama said.
He said government’s decision to establish the Fund followed the receipt of the report of the Otumfuo Mediation Committee on December 16, 2025, after which he announced that the guns in Bawku must be silenced and the conflict resolved through lawful processes, in accordance with the Constitution and the laws of Ghana.
President Mahama said there had since been considerable improvement in the security situation, noting that reports indicated that gunshots were no longer being heard at night and that impunity had abated.
He said the improved security environment had created the conditions for government to return to Bawku with development projects and ensure that the area received its fair share of national development.
President Mahama said the prolonged conflict had affected the provision of essential public services and stalled development projects in the area.
He noted that government was unable to post National Service personnel and medical personnel to Bawku because of the security situation.
The President also cited the Tamli Dam project, which he said had stalled after an employee of the company working on the project was killed, forcing the contractor to withdraw from the area.
According to him, the dam, which is expected to benefit four districts in the Bawku area, could now be revisited as the security situation improves.
“I am happy that now we have the opportunity to go back and continue the development to enable the people of the area benefit from all the projects that we have been undertaking, and that Bawku gets its fair share of the national cake,” he said.
President Mahama said the Fund would support infrastructure and other areas the committee deemed appropriate, with as many districts within the Bawku area as possible expected to benefit.
He expressed confidence in the membership of the committee and said its members had demonstrated integrity and efficiency in public service over the years.
President Mahama subsequently declared the Board of the Bawku Revitalisation Fund duly inaugurated.
The Bawku Revitalisation Committee is chaired by the Minister for Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson.
Other members are the Member of Parliament for Bawku Central and Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga; His Royal Majesty Cletus Abugri, Chief of Timpane; the Upper East Regional Minister, Akamgure Donatus Atanga; and the Member of Parliament for Garu, Thomas Anaba Winsome.
