Joint Team Formed to Review Transport Fare Inputs

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) have announced the formation of a joint team with the Ministry of Transport to review all cost inputs before any decision is taken on public transport fares for the 2026 fare window.

“To ensure that the eventual outcome is fair in the best interest of both operators and the travelling public, a team comprising representatives of the Ministry of Transport, the GPRTU and the GRTCC has been formed to review all cost inputs,” the statement read.

The unions explained in a statement that consultations formally began at a meeting with the Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe and his technical team in Accra on Tuesday.

At the meeting, the unions presented a proposal for an upward review of fares, while Government outlined prevailing macroeconomic conditions, ongoing measures to stabilise the Ghana cedi and the GHS 2.00 per litre diesel intervention aimed at cushioning operators and passengers.

“We wish to reassure the public that existing approved fares remain in force across the country,” the union stated.

They urged drivers, station masters and transport owners to maintain current fares until further notice, and appealed to passengers and stakeholders to remain calm and cooperative as the process runs its full course.

“The outcome of this exercise will be communicated to the general public in due course,” they stated.
