AMA Partners with Women Accountants to Boost Revenue Compliance and Financial Literacy at Makola Market

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has reiterated the vital role of local revenue collection in driving municipal development, urging professional bodies and civic organisations to integrate tax compliance into community outreach initiatives.
The Chief Executive of the AMA, Mr Michael Kpakpo Allotey, made the call when executive members of the Association of Women Accountants, Ghana (AWAG) paid him a courtesy call at the Assembly ahead of a planned financial literacy campaign for traders at Makola Market.
While commending the Association for its voluntary effort to build the financial capacity of market women, Mr Allotey stressed that civic education must go hand-in-hand with civic responsibility.
He requested that AWAG incorporate modules on the timely payment of statutory market tolls, business operating permits, and relevant local fees into their training modules.
“Compliance with approved revenue obligations is essential to enable the Assembly to provide continuous sanitation services, maintain market infrastructure, and undertake developmental projects that directly benefit traders and residents,” the mayor noted.
He assured the delegation of the Assembly’s full backing, reiterating that the AMA’s doors remain open to collaborative partnerships that promote economic empowerment and safeguard local enterprise.
Briefing the Mayor on the upcoming outreach, the President of AWAG, Ms Efua Bonsu, stated that the initiative aims to equip informal sector operators with practical financial skills to transition from subsistence trading to sustainable, growth-oriented commercial enterprises.
She outlined that the training at Makola Market will focus on four core pillars, including bookkeeping, asset and risk protection, financial planning and access and business continuity.
Ms Bonsu noted that the delegation deemed it essential to seek the Assembly’s administrative guidance and endorsement prior to launching the campaign, expressing appreciation to the AMA for its continuous support toward women-led economic initiatives within the metropolis.
