Government Reaffirms Commitment to Combating Illicit Arms

The Government has reaffirmed its commitment to combating the proliferation of illicit firearms and strengthening national security through sustained measures to protect lives, preserve peace and uphold the rule of law.

The Minister for the Interior, Mr Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, gave the assurance on Thursday at the National Arms Destruction Ceremony held to commemorate the United Nations Small Arms Destruction Day.

He said the exercise was not only the destruction of firearms but also a demonstration of the Government’s determination to ensure a peaceful, safe and gun violence-free Ghana.

“Every weapon destroyed today represents a threat removed from our communities, a life potentially saved and a step towards a safer Ghana,” he stated.

The Minister noted that the destruction of the weapons sent a clear message that Ghana had no place for illegal arms, violence and criminality, adding that the initiative reflected the Government’s resolve to promote dialogue, strengthen public safety and secure a peaceful future for all citizens.

Mr Mohammed-Mubarak reiterated the Government’s commitment to strengthening the country’s security architecture through enhanced border management, improved intelligence collaboration and sustained efforts to curb the proliferation of illicit arms and ammunition.

He urged citizens to remain vigilant and support the security services by providing information that would help prevent the illegal possession and trafficking of firearms.

“Security is a shared responsibility, and together we can ensure that Ghana remains a beacon of peace and stability in the region,” he said.

The Minister stressed that the ultimate objective of the arms destruction exercise was to protect lives, preserve peace and create an enabling environment for national development and prosperity.

He called on all Ghanaians to continue supporting initiatives aimed at removing illegal firearms from circulation, noting that every weapon destroyed contributes to building a safer and more secure nation.

Mr Mohammed-Mubarak expressed confidence that with continued collaboration between the Government, the security agencies and the public, Ghana would sustain its reputation as a peaceful and stable country while creating a secure environment for present and future generations.
