Justice Akuffo Quits Council of State; President Mahama Accepts

President John Dramani Mahama has accepted the resignation of Justice Sophia A.B. Akuffo from the Council of State, the Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye-Ofosu, has confirmed.

Justice Akuffo submitted her resignation letter to the President in September 2025 without disclosing her reasons.

The President was initially asked by the Council of State to hold off on accepting the resignation while they engaged her to determine whether any grievance could be addressed.

The Council later advised the President to proceed with the acceptance.

“She is no longer a member of the Council of State,” the Minister said, adding that processes to find a replacement are underway and an announcement will be made in due course.

In a related development, Mr Kwakye-Ofosu also confirmed that Dr Bossman Asare, Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, has written to the President indicating his resignation effective 31st July 2026.

“Dr Asare cited a desire to return to academia and resume his career as a staff member of the University of Ghana, and conveyed his thanks and appreciation to the President and the people of Ghana for the opportunity to serve,” he disclosed.

Mr Kwakye-Ofosu added that another Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Mr Samuel Tetteh, has also gone on retirement, with processes underway to find a replacement.
