KMA’s Revenue Collection Goes Digital

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has announced plans to digitise key areas of its revenue collection system, with Business Operating Permits (BOPs) and daily tolls set to transition to a cashless payment system from September 2026.

The digitisation initiative will cover payments for Business Operating Permits (BOPs) or licences, daily tolls at markets and transport terminals, as well as parking fees.

According to the KMA, effective September 15, 2026, payments for BOPs and licences will be made entirely through digital platforms.

Under the new system, business owners will receive billing notices directly on their mobile phones, accompanied by a payment link. They can simply tap the link and complete their payments within seconds.

For daily tolls, payments will be made to authorised KMA officers using Point-of-Sale (POS) devices. Payers will receive an instant printed receipt as proof of payment to the Assembly.

The Assembly said a pilot phase of the new revenue collection system will begin on August 17, 2026, at the Racecourse Market.

During the pilot phase, all daily toll payments at the market will be made exclusively through POS devices.

KMA has also commenced a registration exercise to enable daily toll payers to migrate to the digital payment system. The exercise will also help the Assembly maintain accurate personal and transaction records of daily toll payers.

The full rollout of the digital revenue collection system across all markets, transport terminals and parking areas in Kumasi is scheduled to begin on January 1, 2027.

The initiative is expected to improve revenue mobilisation, enhance transparency and accountability, and reduce the handling of physical cash in the Assembly’s revenue collection processes.
