NACOC Director-General Calls for Collective Action Against Rising Drug Abuse

The Director-General of the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), Brigadier General Maxwell Obuba Mantey, has called on all stakeholders to support efforts to combat the growing menace of drug abuse and illicit drug trafficking in the country.

According to him, the alarming rate at which drugs are destroying the lives of many young people requires a coordinated national response to safeguard the future of the country.

He made the call when he led a delegation from NACOC to pay a working visit to the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu, as part of activities leading to the commemoration of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, scheduled for June 26, 2026, at the UPSA Main Auditorium.

The visit was aimed at soliciting the support of the Chief Imam and his office in intensifying public advocacy against drug abuse, as well as officially inviting him to participate in the grand durbar marking the global observance.

Responding, Brigadier General Obuba Mantey noted that addressing the drug abuse challenge requires the active involvement of religious leaders, parents, educational institutions, community groups and the media to complement NACOC’s efforts in protecting vulnerable individuals from the harmful effects of drugs.

The Director-General reiterated NACOC’s commitment to intensifying public education, prevention and enforcement measures to curb the growing threat of substance abuse and ensure a safer society.

He thanked the Chief Imam for granting the delegation audience and for his continued support in promoting moral values and national development.

During the engagement, Sheikh Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu expressed concern over the increasing incidence of drug abuse, particularly among the youth.

He noted that the indiscriminate use of drugs poses a serious threat to the future of young people and the development of the nation.

The Chief Imam commended the management and staff of NACOC for their dedication and commitment to tackling drug abuse and illicit drug trafficking across the country.
