President Mahama Commissions Phase Three of Zonda Tec Vehicle Assembly Plant
President John Dramani Mahama has commissioned Phase Three of the Zonda Tec Ghana Limited Vehicle Assembly Plant, calling the expanded facility a milestone in Ghana’s drive to build a competitive manufacturing economy and create sustainable jobs.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony in Tema, the President said the new plant reaffirmed Government’s commitment to industrialisation through local production rather than dependence on imports.
He noted that the Tema industrial enclave had witnessed several new factories over the past 18 months, saying the commissioning of the expanded assembly plant reflected growing investor confidence in Ghana’s economy.
“Today’s commissioning marks another important milestone in Ghana’s industrial journey. It reaffirms our conviction that sustainable prosperity will not come from importing all that we consume, but from producing what we use and exporting what we make,” he said.
President Mahama said facilities such as Zonda Tec represented confidence in Ghana’s workforce and demonstrated the country’s ability to create decent employment opportunities for present and future generations.
He praised the company’s transformation from a vehicle distributor established in 2010 into one of West Africa’s most modern vehicle assembly operations, assembling heavy-duty vehicles, passenger cars, sport utility vehicles and light trucks from leading Chinese automotive brands.
The President disclosed that the Phase Three expansion would increase the company’s annual production capacity to approximately 3,000 heavy and light-duty vehicles, strengthening Ghana’s position in regional vehicle manufacturing.
He also commended Zonda Tec for establishing the Zonda Tec Academy to train young Ghanaians in automotive engineering and the Zonda Tec Foundation, which has introduced scholarship opportunities for Ghanaian students to study automotive manufacturing in China.
President Mahama further thanked the company for its planned donation of a vehicle to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, popularly known as MahamaCares, describing the gesture as an example of responsible corporate citizenship.
He officially declared the Phase Three Vehicle Assembly Plant open and expressed confidence that the facility would continue to expand, create thousands more jobs and attract additional manufacturing investment into Ghana.
