TANO SOUTH RTI OFFICERS EDUCATE PUBLIC ON RIGHT TO INFORMATION

• 2 MIN READ

The Tano South Municipal Assembly, through its Right to Information (RTI) Unit, has educated the public on the Right to Information Act, 2019 (Act 989) during a public education programme on After 2 Radio in Bechem. The programme, held on Friday, 24th July 2026, formed part of efforts to increase public awareness of the RTI framework and empower citizens to exercise their right to access information held by public institutions. The RTI Officers explained that the Act, which gives effect to Article 21(1)(f) of the 1992 Constitution, provides an important framework for promoting transparency, accountability and informed citizen participation in governance.

The RTI Officers educated listeners on the significance of access to information and explained that citizens can request information from public institutions by following the procedures prescribed under the law. They guided the public on how to submit RTI requests and informed listeners that persons seeking information could visit the RTI Unit of the Municipal Assembly to make their applications. The discussion also covered applicable application fees and the importance of using the established channels to facilitate timely and effective processing of information requests.

The radio engagement provided an accessible platform for community members to interact directly with the RTI Officers. Listeners called into the programme to ask questions and seek clarification on the practical application of the RTI Act, including how they could exercise their right to obtain information from public institutions. The RTI Officers responded to the various enquiries and provided explanations to enhance public understanding of the procedures and responsibilities associated with accessing information under Act 989. The interactive approach helped bring the RTI message closer to residents who may otherwise have limited opportunities to participate in formal sensitisation programmes.

The programme highlighted the important role of RTI Officers in bridging the information gap between public institutions and citizens by educating the public, facilitating access to official information and promoting responsible exercise of the right to information. Increased awareness of the RTI Act can empower community members to seek information relevant to public services, development programmes and issues affecting their daily lives, thereby enabling more informed participation in community development. The Tano South Municipal Assembly reaffirmed the importance of continuous public education and engagement with community stakeholders as part of efforts to strengthen transparency, accountability and good governance within the Municipality.
