Toende CHPS Compound to Bring Essential Healthcare Services Closer to Residents

• 2 MIN READ

Residents of Toende and surrounding communities in the Bawku West District are expected to benefit from improved access to essential healthcare services following the commissioning of a new Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compound by the Upper East Regional Minister, Mr Akamugri Donatus Atanga.

The facility, commissioned on Saturday, is expected to strengthen access to basic healthcare at the community level by providing space for consultations, outpatient services, maternal care, observation and the dispensing of medicines.

The commissioning formed part of the Regional Minister’s Accounting to the People’s Tour, during which he inspected and commissioned development projects across the Upper East Region.

The facility comprises two consulting rooms, an Outpatient Department (OPD), a lying-in room, a delivery room, an observation room, a dispensary and a records room. It also has four units of staff accommodation to support healthcare personnel serving the community.

The provision of these facilities is expected to support the delivery of essential health services within Toende, reducing the need for residents to travel to other communities for services that can be provided at the primary healthcare level.

Speaking at the commissioning, Mr Atanga expressed appreciation to the community for voluntarily providing land for the project, describing their contribution as an important demonstration of local support for development.

He urged residents to take responsibility for protecting the facility against vandalism and theft to ensure that it continued to serve its intended purpose.

“This project is your project. You have to take good care of it. Don’t allow people to come and steal or break the louvres,” he said.

The Regional Minister stressed the need for community members to safeguard the investment and help preserve the facility for present and future generations.

The commissioning of the Toende CHPS compound highlights the importance of community-level health infrastructure in improving access to essential services, particularly for residents who may face difficulties travelling long distances to obtain healthcare.

The facility is expected to contribute to healthcare delivery in Toende and surrounding communities as part of broader efforts to bring public services closer to the people of the Upper East Region.
