The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has clarified statements made by the Metropolitan Chief Executive, Mr Richard Ofori-Agyeman Boadi, during an interview with investigative journalist, Mr Manasseh Azure Awuni, on sanitation management in the Kumasi Metropolis.

In a statement issued on Monday, KMA said the interview covered street sweeping, financing of sanitation services, the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) sanitation module, and the Sanitation Improvement Package (SIP) contract with Zoomlion Ghana Limited.

The Assembly explained that under the YEA sanitation module, KMA previously had over 580 street sweepers assigned to maintain roads and public spaces.

However, the number has now dropped to 102 sweepers, making it “practically impossible” to ensure daily sweeping across the metropolis.

On remuneration, the mayor stated that current sweepers engaged by KMA receive a monthly allowance of GHโ‚ต800.00, stressing that this was only to provide information on current payments and not to compare with salaries previously paid by Zoomlion Ghana Limited under the YEA module.

The Assembly further clarified that the SIP contract between KMA and Zoomlion Ghana Limited remains in force and continues to be operational.

Mr Boadi also noted that the Assemblyโ€™s statutory allocation of 10% of the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) earmarked for sanitation is inadequate to address the sanitation challenges facing Kumasi.

He said the size of the city demands significantly greater financial resources than the current allocation.

Despite the challenges, KMA said it remains committed to improving environmental sanitation through collaboration with stakeholders and assured residents of its determination to keep Kumasi clean.

“The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, under the leadership of Mr Boadi, remains fully committed to improving environmental sanitation and assures residents of its unwavering commitment to keeping Kumasi clean despite prevailing financial and operational constraints,” the statement said.

KMA thanked the public for their understanding and continued support in the drive towards a cleaner Kumasi.

The statement was issued by KMA’s Public Relations Unit.
