Ghana, US Pledge Stronger Cooperation in Development and Security

Ghana and the United States have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation in development and security, with both countries pledging to deepen collaboration in key sectors while intensifying efforts to combat crime and terrorism.

Speaking at the 250th Independence Excellence Awards held on Wednesday in Accra under the theme, “Freedom250,” the Minister of Justice and Attorney General, Dr. Dominic Ayine, said Ghana remains ready and willing to work closely with the United States in advancing shared goals and promoting mutual prosperity.

According to Dr. Ayine, Ghana is committed to expanding cooperation with the United States in areas such as healthcare, education, infrastructure development, and security.

“Ghana is ready and willing to walk with the United States on the onward journey for the years ahead,” he stated.

The Attorney General emphasized the longstanding relationship between the two nations and commended the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) for providing Ghana with duty-free access to more than 1,800 product lines, thereby increasing trade and economic opportunities.

He also expressed appreciation to the United States for its support during Ghana’s debt restructuring process.

Dr. Ayine highlighted recent gains in the country’s economic recovery efforts, stating that Ghana has stabilized its economy, restored fiscal discipline, and renewed investor confidence.

He further noted that the country completed the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Extended Credit Facility programme in May.

The Chargé d’Affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Ghana, Rolf Olson, reiterated Washington’s commitment to supporting Ghana in addressing cybercrime, terrorism, and other transnational crimes.

He pointed to the recent extradition of former Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC) Chief Executive Officer, Sedina Attionu Tamakloe, who was convicted of causing financial loss to the state and stealing, as evidence of the strong cooperation between the two countries in ensuring accountability and justice.

“The United States deeply values Ghana’s partnership in confronting cybercrimes and terrorism. Through close cooperation, we continue to hold criminal actors accountable through evidence exchange, investigative support, and extradition of fugitives,” Mr. Olson said.
