Tamale Gets Immediate Water Relief as Bupe-Tamale-Yendi Project Moves Forward

Residents of Tamale and nearby communities are set for relief as the immediate upgrade of the existing Bupe–Tamale–Yendi Water Supply Project will add over 30 million gallons of water daily upon the project’s completion.

Ghana Water Company Limited CEO, Mr. Adam Mutawakilu, briefed the Northern Regional Minister, Mr. Ali Adolf John, on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, at the NRCC.

The meeting brought together the Tamale Mayor, Sagnarigu MCE, and regional officials to review progress on the €312 million water project.

Mr. Ali Adolf John said the perennial water shortages in Tamale have lasted too long, describing President John Dramani Mahama’s appointment of Mr. Mutawakilu as CEO as a sign of the government’s seriousness in delivering its campaign promise to Northern Ghana.

“The perennial water problem in Tamale is long overdue for resolution, and with the commitment of President Mahama’s government and the leadership of Mr. Mutawakilu, this challenge will soon become a thing of the past,” the Minister stated.

Mr. Mutawakilu said that while the Bupe–Tamale–Yendi project is the long-term solution, GWCL is not waiting, noting that his technical team is already replacing ageing parts at the current Tamale Water Treatment Plant to boost production immediately.

Once complete, the new Bupe project will produce 135,000 cubic metres of water per day — about 30 million gallons — to serve Tamale, Yendi, and surrounding communities grappling with rapid population growth.

Mr. Mutawakilu disclosed that the government has secured €106 million to start work on the €312m project, assuring stakeholders that financing is in place so contractors will be paid on time and work won’t stall.

He also informed the citizens that a team of experts will soon return to conduct the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA).

That, he said, will identify persons and properties affected, enabling compensation before construction starts. The CEO appealed to traditional authorities, assemblies, and residents to cooperate with the assessment team.

The Northern Regional Minister pledged the full support of chiefs, local authorities, and residents, saying the project holds “immense socio-economic significance” for present and future generations.

Also present were the Mayor of Tamale, Mr. Abubakari Adam Takoro and Sagnarigu Municipal Chief Executive, Mr. Abdulai Imoro Gong.

All parties agreed to work together to deliver a reliable water system that will transform livelihoods across the Northern Region.
