It was an emotional scene at the Tamale International Airport on Friday, June 13, 2026, as the first batch of Ghanaian Hajj pilgrims returned from Saudi Arabia awaiting family members, prayers, and shouts of “Allahu Akbar”.
The Northern Regional Minister, Mr. Ali Adolf John, led the official reception on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama.
Mr. Ali Adolf John described the occasion as “a moment of joy not only for the pilgrims and their families, but for the nation.”— children running to meet parents, wives embracing husbands, and families breaking down in tears after weeks of separation.
He noted that the Northern Region continues to play a significant role in Ghana’s Islamic heritage, with its Muslim communities long contributing to peacebuilding and national cohesion.
The Minister praised the pilgrims for discipline and good conduct in Saudi Arabia, saying their behavior “reflected positively on Ghana and enhanced the country’s reputation within the international Muslim community.”
Speaking to the returning faithful, the Regional Minister urged them to carry the values of Hajj — faith, sacrifice, humility, patience, and obedience back to their communities.
He also charged them to become “ambassadors of peace, unity, and moral uprightness” and to pray for Ghana’s peace, stability, and prosperity.
He also used the moment to thank the Ghana Hajj Taskforce, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ghana’s mission in Saudi Arabia, aviation and health teams, and security agencies for ensuring a safe and dignified pilgrimage.
Friday’s arrival marks the start of Ghana’s 2026 Hajj return operations. More batches are expected in the coming days.
At the airport, family members expressed gratitude to Allah for journey mercies as they reunited with loved ones who had just completed one of Islam’s five pillars.
The ceremony ended with prayers and thanksgiving for the safe return of the pilgrims and for Allah to accept their Hajj as “Hajj Mabroor”.
