President Mahama Urges Senior Citizens to Enrol on MahamaCares for Health Support

President John Dramani Mahama has urged senior citizens to enrol on the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, known as MahamaCares, to help fund treatment for non-communicable diseases and other age-related health conditions.

The President made the appeal while addressing this year’s Republic Day Senior Citizens’ Luncheon, an annual event held to honour the wisdom, resilience and patriotism of Ghana’s elderly population.

He said the Fund had been established specifically to assist with non-communicable diseases, many of which are geriatric in nature or arise as complications of aging.

“I urge our senior citizens to take advantage of this initiative to help fund any health issues you might be dealing with,” he said.

President Mahama said Government remained committed to improving social protection systems and strengthening healthcare services to ensure that older Ghanaians could age with dignity and peace of mind, describing dignity, security, accessible and affordable healthcare, and social protection as things senior citizens deserved above all.

He said the greatest tribute Government could pay to the country’s elderly was not merely organising ceremonies such as the luncheon, but building a Ghana worthy of their sacrifice, adding that this included restoring economic stability, strengthening healthcare and expanding social protection for the generation that laid the foundation for the Republic.
