Gov’t to build new maternity block for Korle Bu

Government is progressing with procurement arrangements for the construction of a new maternity block for the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
President John Dramani Mahama disclosed this during the commissioning of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
“We will also pull down the old Guggisberg building, which has become unsafe and poses a danger to mothers and healthcare workers,” he said, adding that the new maternity block would replace it.
“Every day, our mothers continue to give birth in that building, and we cannot allow such a situation to continue,” he said.
The announcement formed part of a broader address in which President Mahama outlined government’s investments in healthcare infrastructure.
He said the newly commissioned cardiac catheterization laboratory, which replaced a facility destroyed by fire in March 2025, represented restoration, renewal and progress for the country’s healthcare system, and that similar investments were being made in comprehensive cardiology centres at teaching hospitals in Kumasi, Tamale, Takoradi and Ho.
He said government’s healthcare investments were guided by the belief that every Ghanaian, regardless of income, location or social status, deserved access to quality healthcare.
“The true wealth of any nation lies in the health and wellbeing of its people. Healthy citizens are more productive, children learn better, families thrive, businesses grow and nations prosper,” he said, adding that every investment made in healthcare was therefore an investment in Ghana’s human capital and the future of the country.
President Mahama said government remained committed to expanding healthcare infrastructure, strengthening the health workforce, investing in medical technology, supporting research and innovation, and ensuring that quality healthcare became accessible to every Ghanaian.
“Let history record that this generation chose to invest not only in roads, bridges and buildings, but also in the health, dignity and future of our people,” he said.
