Gov’t pursuing plans to turn Ho Airport into aviation hub – President Mahama
Government remains committed to making the Ho Airport commercially viable, President John Dramani Mahama has said, disclosing plans to establish a pilot training school, an aeronautical engineering training centre, aircraft maintenance facilities, and aircraft valeting and repair services at the airport.
President Mahama made the disclosure during a Resetting Ghana citizens’ engagement held at the Ho Technical University, as part of his tour of the Volta Region. He acknowledged that commercial passenger traffic at the airport had been slower than anticipated because of the short distance between Ho and Accra.
“On the Ho Airport, although commercial passenger traffic has been slower than anticipated because of the short distance between Ho and Accra, government remains committed to making the airport commercially viable,” he said.
He said the additional services planned for the airport would transform it into an aviation hub and create new employment opportunities for the area. “These additional services will transform the airport into an aviation hub and create new employment opportunities,” he said.
President Mahama said the Tema Development Corporation had also commenced work on the Oxygen City housing project adjacent to the airport, which was expected to increase real estate development in the area.
He said the airport project formed part of a broader set of infrastructure investments he outlined for the Volta Region during the engagement, including the Aflao Market project, which he said had completed its feasibility studies, design work and land acquisition, with procurement processes about to begin. He said this project complemented 18 other market projects planned across the region.
President Mahama said these investments reflected government’s commitment to accountable governance, noting that the Resetting Ghana Tour had been introduced to allow government to report back to citizens on the projects and programmes being implemented in their communities.
