Ghana Water Ltd to Resume Spillage at Weija Dam; Residents Urged to Evacuate

Ghana Water Ltd (GWL) has announced that it will resume spillage at the Weija Dam from Wednesday, 9 September 2026, following a sharp rise in water levels caused by heavy rains upstream and continued rainfall in the Densu River catchment.

According to the company on Monday, the dam’s water level has reached 45.2 feet, edging close to the 46‑foot threshold that triggers precautionary spillage to safeguard the integrity of the facility.

GWL has therefore directed all residents living downstream of the dam to evacuate immediately to avoid any eventuality. Communities likely to be affected include Tetegu, Oblogo, Pambros Salt, Lower McCarthy Hill, Lower Weija, Bojo Beach, Ada Kopey and surrounding areas.

The company noted that public safety remains its priority and urged residents to remain alert, follow official evacuation directives, and avoid risky activities near the floodplain.

Authorities including NADMO, the District Assembly, traditional leaders, assembly members, and resident associations have been asked to take precautionary measures and prepare for evacuation.

“GWL is closely monitoring the situation and will continue to provide updates, emphasising that public cooperation is essential to minimise risks,” the statement ended.
