US Donates Military Equipment to Strengthen Ghana Navy’s Maritime Security
The United States (US) Embassy in Accra has donated 84 pallets of assorted military equipment to the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), with a significant portion of the equipment allocated to the Ghana Navy to strengthen its maritime security and operational capabilities.
The equipment was officially handed over at a brief ceremony held at the 48 Engineers Regiment in Teshie on Wednesday.
The donation, made under the auspices of the Government of the United States of America, underscores the enduring defence cooperation between Ghana and the US, as well as their shared commitment to promoting peace, security and stability.
Presenting the equipment, the Chargé d’Affaires at the US Embassy in Accra, Mr Rolf Olson, said the donation forms part of efforts to enhance Ghana’s defence capabilities by addressing critical operational requirements and improving long-term readiness.
He explained that the equipment designated for the Ghana Navy includes radar systems, radios, antennas, monitoring displays, body armour and boarding equipment.
According to him, these assets will enhance maritime surveillance, strengthen the protection of Ghana’s territorial waters, improve the Navy’s ability to deter piracy and reinforce maritime security.
Receiving the equipment on behalf of the Chief of the Defence Staff, Lieutenant General William Agyapong, the Chief of the Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Godwin Livinus Bessing, described the United States as a dependable partner that has consistently supported the Ghana Armed Forces through training, technical assistance and equipment donations.
He noted that the equipment would significantly improve the operational readiness of the Ghana Navy and enhance Ghana’s capacity to contribute to regional and global peace and security efforts.
Rear Admiral Bessing expressed gratitude to the Government of the United States for its continued support to the Ghana Armed Forces and assured that the equipment would be deployed effectively and responsibly for its intended purpose.
He reaffirmed the Ghana Navy’s commitment to safeguarding the country’s maritime domain while contributing to national security, peace and stability.
