Ghana, Germany Explore Deeper Defence Cooperation
The Minister for Defence, Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, has reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to strengthening defence and security cooperation with Germany following a courtesy call by the German Ambassador to Ghana, His Excellency Frederik Landshöft, in Accra.
Welcoming the delegation, Mr Adjei expressed appreciation for Germany’s longstanding support to Ghana, describing the European nation as a trusted friend and strategic partner that had consistently contributed to strengthening the capacity of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).
He noted that assistance provided through the German Military Advisory Group and various military training programmes had significantly enhanced the professional development and operational effectiveness of the GAF.
The Minister commended Germany for its continued support in logistics and equipment, which he said had improved the operational readiness of the Armed Forces, and reaffirmed Ghana’s readiness to expand cooperation through military training, officer exchange programmes and technical assistance.
Mr Adjei also called for increased collaboration in naval training, surveillance and intelligence sharing, describing them as critical areas in addressing Ghana’s evolving maritime and national security challenges.
He stressed that stronger cooperation in intelligence sharing and border security would be essential in tackling emerging threats, particularly the growing menace of violent extremism and its potential impact on the West African sub-region.
Ambassador Landshöft said the longstanding partnership between Ghana and Germany had yielded several projects aimed at enhancing Ghana’s defence capabilities.
He cited the Signal School at Burma Camp, the construction of a maintenance hub in Tamale, a satellite station in Bolgatanga, the Dog Academy and support for the Airfield as key initiatives under the bilateral defence partnership.
The Ambassador disclosed that the maintenance hub in Tamale, expected to be commissioned in October 2026, would provide facilities for the servicing of large and specialised machinery, further boosting the logistical and operational capacity of the Ghana Armed Forces.
Ambassador Landshöft reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to supporting Ghana’s defence and security institutions and commended President John Dramani Mahama for his approach to addressing emerging security challenges in the Sahel.
He noted that Ghana’s strategic role in the region made continued cooperation between the two countries important to promoting peace, stability and security in West Africa.
