Acting Defence Minister Commissions Butler Barracks to Improve Military Welfare
The Acting Minister for Defence and Minister for Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Baah Forson, has commissioned the newly constructed Butler Barracks and Offices Complex, reaffirming the Government’s commitment to improving the welfare, working conditions and operational effectiveness of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).
The project comprises modern accommodation, administrative offices and training facilities for the GAF Central Band, the Central Ordnance Depot (COD), and the School of Ordnance.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony on Wednesday, Dr Forson described the project as a testament to the Government’s unwavering commitment to strengthening the country’s defence infrastructure while enhancing the welfare of military personnel.
He commended the Military High Command and the Ministry of Defence for their dedication and professionalism in delivering the project, noting that the newly completed barracks would significantly improve operational efficiency and the quality of life of personnel.
Dr Forson also reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to completing other critical defence infrastructure projects, including the Afari Military Hospital, while pursuing sustainable approaches to military infrastructure development across the country.
The Chief of Staff at the General Headquarters, Air Vice Marshal Joshua Lartei Mensah-Larkai, described the commissioning as a historic milestone for the Ghana Armed Forces, adding that the Butler Barracks ranks among modern military facilities comparable to those of armed forces around the world.
He emphasised that military readiness begins at home, stressing that barracks are more than places of accommodation, as they serve as environments where discipline and leadership are nurtured.
Presenting the project brief, the Director of Engineer Services (DES), Brigadier General Jonas Wiafe, explained that the project was undertaken to relocate the Armed Forces Central Band, the Headquarters of the Central Ordnance Depot and the School of Ordnance from their former locations along the El-Wak–37 corridor to modern, purpose-built facilities.
Brigadier General Wiafe urged all beneficiaries to uphold the highest standards of maintenance to preserve the facility for future generations.
He expressed appreciation to Unique Development Limited, the project engineers, and all stakeholders whose dedication and collaboration ensured the successful completion of the project.
