President Mahama Cuts Sod for 2,030-Bay Multi-Tiered Car Park and Airport Hotels Complex
President John Dramani Mahama has cut sod for the construction of a multi-purpose, multi-tiered car park and airport hotels complex at the Accra International Airport, describing the project as a strategic investment to prepare Ghana’s principal international gateway for future growth.
The seven-storey development, being undertaken by the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), will provide approximately 2,030 covered parking bays alongside two hotels, retail and dining facilities, offices, a food court, a pedestrian sky bridge, a sky lounge and an aircraft-viewing observatory.
Speaking at the sod-cutting ceremony on Thursday, President Mahama said the project was not merely another construction initiative but a response to the increasing demands on Ghana’s aviation infrastructure.
“This is about preparing Ghana’s principal international gateway for the demands of the future, improving the experience of passengers and visitors, and ensuring that our airport infrastructure keeps pace with Ghana’s economic and development ambitions,” he said.
The President noted that passenger traffic through the Accra International Airport had risen from 1.8 million in 2022 to 2.5 million in 2025, placing significant pressure on parking facilities, airport roads and passenger pick-up and drop-off areas.
He said the new facility would improve traffic circulation, reduce congestion and optimise the use of limited land within the airport enclave through vertical development.
According to him, the complex would cater for travellers across different income levels with a 120-room five-star hotel and a 250-room three-star hotel, while also providing shopping, banking, restaurants and business facilities.
President Mahama said the development would transform the airport enclave into a vibrant commercial and hospitality hub and consolidate the Accra International Airport’s status as a true 24-hour facility.
He urged contractors and consultants to ensure quality, value for money and timely completion, stressing that the project must be completed and commissioned for the benefit of the Ghanaian people.
The President said government remained committed to investing in aviation infrastructure to strengthen connectivity and position Ghana as a leading aviation hub in West Africa.
