Defence Minister Inspects Ajumako Military Barracks Project, Reaffirms Commitment to Military Expansion
The Minister for Defence, Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, has inspected ongoing construction works on the Ajumako Military Barracks in the Central Region as part of efforts to strengthen Ghana’s military infrastructure and expand the presence of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) across the country.
The inspection, conducted on Thursday, formed part of the Minister’s oversight responsibilities to assess progress on the project and ensure the construction works are being executed according to approved specifications, quality standards and timelines.
Mr Adjei was accompanied by the Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS), Lieutenant General William Agyapong, and the Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu.
The defence minister commended Imperial Homes, the contractor, for maintaining the pace of construction and staying on schedule despite additional components being introduced to the original project plan.
He charged the consultant to maintain strict oversight of the project and ensure that all works conformed to the approved specifications and the required quality standards.
Mr Adjei highlighted the importance of delivering infrastructure that would meet the operational and accommodation needs of personnel while providing value for public investment.
The Chief of the Defence Staff, Lt Gen Agyapong, also commended Imperial Homes for the progress made and the commitment demonstrated towards the project.
He explained that establishing military bases in the additional six regions was part of the Ghana Armed Forces’ broader expansion drive to enhance its presence and operational reach across the country.
According to him, the initiative had so far led to the ongoing establishment of military bases at Dambai and Ajumako.
Lt Gen Agyapong assured the contractor of the continued support and cooperation of the Military High Command to facilitate the timely completion of the project.
The Director General of Engineer Services, Brigadier General Jonas Agyei Wiafe, briefed the delegation on the progress of the project and provided an update on the various components of the barracks and their current stages of completion.
When completed, the Ajumako facility will be named Erskine Barracks, in honour of the late Major General Alexander Erskine (Rtd), a former Chief of the Army Staff and former Commander of the United Nations Truce Supervision Organisation (UNTSO) in the Middle East.
