KMA, IOM Launch Local Technical Committee on Migration in Kumasi
The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), in collaboration with the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), has established a Local Technical Committee (LTC) on Migration to strengthen coordination, collaboration, and information sharing among key governance institutions within the metropolis.
The 12-member committee was inaugurated during its maiden meeting in Kumasi, bringing together representatives from various state agencies to foster a coordinated and holistic approach to addressing migration dynamics in the city.
Speaking at the launch, the Metro Coordinating Director of the KMA, Mr Francis Dwira Darko, highlighted that migration remains an integral aspect of human existence, noting that Ghana, and Kumasi in particular, continues to experience its associated socio-economic challenges.
“In Kumasi, we see them a lot on our principal streets and in certain known communities as well. It is glaring to all of us the issues that emanate from it,” Mr Darko observed.
He commended the strategic partnership between the KMA and the IOM, particularly their joint efforts to create public awareness and enhance institutional frameworks.
He further reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to the initiative, noting that office space has been allocated to ensure the seamless operations of the committee.
Mr Darko appealed to all institutional partners to collaborate effectively with city authorities to address migration challenges in a sustainable manner.
The newly inaugurated committee comprises representatives from the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, Ghana Immigration Service, Ghana Education Service, Ghana Police Service, Ghana Health Service, National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), and the Ghana Enterprises Agency, alongside other key institutions.
The formation of the LTC represents a critical milestone in strengthening local institutional synergies and advancing effective migration governance within the Kumasi Metropolis.
