Agbogbloshie Traders Invited to Help Design 24-Hour Market

Traders at the Agbogbloshie Market will have the opportunity to influence the design of the proposed 24-Hour Market after the Mayor of Accra, Mr Michael Kpakpo Allotey, invited them to submit their priorities and operational needs for the project.
During an engagement with traders, the mayor formally introduced the contractor for the redevelopment project and urged traders to organise themselves and present practical proposals that reflect the needs of their various businesses.
He explained that the government wants the new market to serve traders effectively and encouraged them to identify facilities such as shops, sheds, storage spaces, water, electricity, warehouses and other amenities required to support their operations.
Mr Allotey assured the traders that their legitimate concerns would be considered during consultations with the contractor and project consultants to ensure the market meets the needs of different categories of traders.
The mayor said the project forms part of President John Dramani Mahama’s 24-hour economy agenda and will transform Agbogbloshie into a modern commercial hub with facilities including a police post, fire service post, clinic, pharmacy, daycare centre, bank, cold stores, warehouses, restaurants, food court, supermarket and rest areas for traders travelling from outside Accra.
He, however, cautioned traders against making unrealistic demands that could delay implementation, stressing that the project is intended to benefit traders, customers and the wider public.
A representative of the contractor assured traders that the market design was informed by an assessment of existing trading activities and would improve safety, sanitation, accessibility and business opportunities while supporting round-the-clock commercial activities
