Education Minister Assures Parents of Students’ Safety After Obuasi SHS Allegations
The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has assured parents and guardians that the government is committed to protecting students in schools following allegations of sexual abuse involving 19 students at Obuasi Senior High Technical School.
He gave the assurance at a press briefing on Monday, stressing that the allegations would not be swept under the carpet and that the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service (GES) would pursue all necessary administrative and legal measures to ensure justice.
The Minister also announced that the school had fully reopened to continuing and fresh students to allow normal academic activities to resume.
As part of efforts to strengthen student protection, Mr Iddrisu directed the GES to end the practice of students serving as domestic helpers to head teachers and teachers, describing the move as part of broader efforts to safeguard learners from potential abuse.
He further outlined plans to introduce confidential reporting channels, explore the establishment of a dedicated hotline in partnership with MTN, and provide trauma-informed support for affected students.
Mr Iddrisu called on parents, guardians and the public to support efforts to protect students and help prevent similar incidents in the future.
The Ministry and the GES will also strengthen safeguarding measures and reporting procedures across schools to improve the prevention, detection and handling of abuse cases.
