Foreign Affairs Ministry Requests Details on Alleged Discrepancies in Evacuee Grants
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has requested Multimedia Group to provide information relating to allegations made on Joy FM’s Newsfile programme concerning the disbursement of reintegration and transportation allowances to Ghanaian nationals evacuated from South Africa.
In a letter dated October 26, 2026, the Ministry said its attention had been drawn to allegations made by Isaac Kofi Agyei, described as the Head of Research of Multimedia Group, during the programme aired on October 24, 2026.
According to the Ministry, Isaac Kofi Agyei stated that he had spoken to and could confirm that three Ghanaian evacuees had received GH¢2,000 instead of the GH¢5,500 announced by the Government of Ghana as the total reintegration and transportation allowances payable to each evacuee.
The letter also referenced an allegation that approximately 40 evacuees received the GH¢5,000 reintegration allowance but did not receive the additional GH¢500 transportation allowance. It further noted claims that payments were made without corresponding signatures, although the names of those concerned were associated with signatures in the Ministry’s payment records.
The Ministry said it considers the allegations serious and deserving of thorough investigation, stating that they raise concerns about the integrity of the disbursement process and may adversely affect the reputation of the Ministry and officers responsible for administering and supervising the payments.
The Ministry stated that the allowances and integration packages were publicly announced before the commencement of the evacuation exercise and that, to date, it has not received any complaint from an evacuee regarding a shortfall in either allowance.
It further noted that the allegations emerged approximately five months after the evacuation exercise commenced and indicated that Multimedia Group did not contact the Ministry for verification of the outcome of its interaction with the evacuees mentioned.
The Ministry has requested Multimedia Group to provide the names and contact details of the three evacuees allegedly paid GH¢2,000 instead of the announced GH¢5,500, as well as the names and contact details of the approximately 40 evacuees alleged to have received the GH¢5,000 reintegration allowance without the corresponding GH¢500 transportation allowance.
It also requested the names and relevant particulars of evacuees alleged to have received payments without signing the corresponding acknowledgement records but whose names are reportedly associated with signatures in the Ministry’s payment records.
According to the Ministry, the requested information will enable it to engage the persons concerned, hear their accounts, examine the relevant payment and acknowledgement records, and investigate the allegations objectively.
The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, accountability and the fair and impartial examination of the matters raised and expressed the hope that the requested information would be provided to support an inquiry based on verifiable facts.
