President Mahama Calls for Stronger Ghana-UK Parliamentary Cooperation
President John Dramani Mahama has called for stronger parliamentary diplomacy and deeper cooperation between Ghana and the United Kingdom, describing legislative engagement as an important pillar for strengthening bilateral relations.
Addressing a Presidential Cross-Party Parliamentary Meeting in London on Thursday, the President said parliamentary institutions play an important role in building enduring relationships between countries through policy development, constituency representation, accountability and international engagement.
President Mahama noted that the meeting was his first formal engagement with a cross-party group of British parliamentarians and House of Lords peers since returning to office in January 2025.
He stated the need for regular exchanges between Ghanaian and British legislators to strengthen cooperation and advance shared priorities.
Reflecting on Ghana’s democratic development, the President acknowledged the influence of the United Kingdom’s parliamentary tradition and highlighted Ghana’s record of constitutional governance, peaceful transfers of power and regular elections under the Fourth Republic.
He also pointed to Ghana’s anticipated African Union Chairmanship in 2027 as an opportunity to elevate Africa’s voice in global affairs and deepen engagement with strategic partners such as the United Kingdom.
According to him, Ghana intends to focus on African integration, economic transformation, peace and security, and stronger international cooperation.
President Mahama expressed optimism that the meeting would lay the foundation for more regular interaction between Ghanaian and British parliamentary institutions while creating avenues for collaboration on global development issues.
The engagement brought together members of the UK Parliament and peers of the House of Lords from different political backgrounds for discussions on issues of mutual interest.
