Sekondi NHIS Office Registers, Renews Students’ Memberships
The Sekondi District Office of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) has intensified efforts to improve students’ understanding of health insurance through a three-day education and registration exercise at Methodist Senior High School, Kansaworado, in the Western Region.
The exercise, held from October 19 to 21, 2026, focused on educating students about the benefits of the scheme, services covered under the NHIS and the importance of keeping their memberships active to access healthcare when needed.
Assistant Public Relations Officer of the Sekondi District NHIS Office, Isaac Swanzy, led the education sessions, explaining the objectives of the scheme and how it helps members access covered healthcare services.
He also demonstrated how students could enrol in the scheme, renew expired memberships and access NHIS services through the MyNHIS mobile application and the short code *929#.
Mr Swanzy addressed common misconceptions about the scheme and discussed some of the challenges members may encounter at health facilities. He encouraged the students to seek accurate information about their membership status and the benefits available to them.
Students who had not previously enrolled were registered, while those with expired memberships had them renewed. The exercise was intended to reduce barriers to accessing healthcare arising from inactive NHIS membership.
The initiative received support from Ghana Gas Company as part of its corporate social responsibility commitment to communities along its gas pipeline routes.
The collaboration highlights the role of partnerships between public institutions and corporate organisations in expanding health insurance education and improving access to healthcare.
The Sekondi District NHIS Office expects the exercise to encourage regular membership renewal and help students make better use of the scheme whenever they need medical care.
