NHIA Urges Police Recruits to Enrol in NHIS, Renew Membership

• 2 MIN READ

The Awutu Effutu Senya (AES) District Office of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has taken health insurance education and registration services to the Regional Police Training School in Winneba to encourage recruits and staff to enrol in the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) and keep their memberships active.

The four-day exercise aimed to bring NHIS services closer to security personnel, improve their understanding of the Scheme’s benefits and innovations, and expand membership as part of efforts to achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

Leading the NHIA team, the District Manager, Christopher Oddoye, told the recruits: “You protect the nation, NHIS protects your health.”

He urged them to enrol in the Scheme and renew their memberships regularly to access affordable basic healthcare, particularly when their demanding duties put their health at risk.

Mr Oddoye said the NHIS provided an important social and financial safety net for security personnel by reducing out-of-pocket healthcare expenses, especially during emergencies.

He also explained the One-Time-Attendance Code (OTAC), a mechanism for verifying members’ attendance at health facilities. Members can generate the code by dialling *929# and selecting option 5 before visiting a facility.

He said the system would improve claims management and help curb fraud, stressing the need for members to update their contact details to ensure they could use the service effectively.

The recruits were also briefed on the government’s Free Primary Healthcare (FPHC) initiative, which seeks to provide preventive and health education services at no cost at the basic level of care. These include Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds, health centres, and public health units of polyclinics.

Participants asked questions and received clarifications on the Scheme. The exercise also provided on-site services, including new registrations, membership renewals, Ghana Card linking, contact detail updates, and checks on membership number validity.

The Officer Commanding, ASP Asong Ayrakwa, and the Chaplain and Staff Officer, ASP Rev. Peter Beenyi, were present at the engagement. They commended the NHIA’s AES District Office for the timely initiative.
