Energy Minister Advocates for Stronger Cross-Border Electricity Trade in West Africa
The Minister of Energy and Green Transition, Dr John Abdulai Jinapor, has called on ECOWAS member states to increase cross-border electricity trade to support energy security and economic growth in the sub-region.
Speaking at the 16th Meeting of ECOWAS Ministers in Charge of Energy, Dr Jinapor said increased electricity trade among member states was important to advancing regional integration and ensuring reliable, affordable, accessible and sustainable energy for the people of West Africa.
He said energy security, affordability, accessibility and sustainability were central to the region’s economic growth and long-term development.
According to the Minister, closer cooperation among member states in the energy sector would strengthen electricity supply arrangements and support broader development objectives.
Dr Jinapor urged his fellow ministers to encourage greater cross-border electricity trade and increase the exchange of energy among countries in the sub-region.
“A more energy-secure West Africa is a stronger, more integrated, and more prosperous West Africa,” he said.
The meeting brought together energy ministers from across the ECOWAS region to deliberate on issues relating to energy cooperation and the development of the sub-region’s energy sector.
