Funds allocated for Akosombo, Kpong spillage compensation – President Mahama

Government remains committed to supporting communities affected by the Akosombo and Kpong dam spillage, President John Dramani Mahama has said, assuring that compensation arrangements will be completed fairly, transparently and responsibly.
President Mahama gave the assurance during the sod-cutting ceremony for a 24-hour economy market at Juapong.
“We remain committed to supporting communities affected by the Akosombo and Kpong dam spillage. We understand the hardship caused to families whose homes, farms, businesses and livelihoods were affected,” he said, adding that Government had continued with the necessary verification and assessment processes.
He said funds had been allocated in this year’s budget to begin compensation payments, and that where additional resources were required, further allocations would be made in subsequent budgets.
“Beyond compensation, our focus remains on restoring livelihoods, rebuilding communities and strengthening resilience against future challenges,” he said.
The President situated the assurance within Government’s broader commitment to the Volta Region, saying it was investing deliberately in infrastructure, institutions and programmes that improve the quality of life of the people across the region.
He explained that the compensation process, alongside ongoing investments such as the Juapong market project and the revival of Volta Star Textiles Limited, formed part of a wider effort to restore confidence and rebuild livelihoods in affected communities.
