Ghana and Malaysia to explore deeper security cooperation

Ghana and Malaysia have expressed their commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation in the security sector, with emphasis on intelligence sharing, technology, and the fight against transnational organised crime.

The commitment was made on Thursday in Accra when the Chargé d’Affaires of the High Commission of Malaysia in Ghana, Mr Syed Nauzer Idid, paid a courtesy call to the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak.

The meeting provided an opportunity for both sides to reaffirm the longstanding relations between Ghana and Malaysia and explore areas of mutual interest in security.

Mr Muntaka thanked the Malaysian delegation for the visit and reaffirmed Ghana’s readiness to deepen its partnership with Malaysia.

He stressed the importance of stronger intelligence sharing among countries, noting that the changing security environment and emerging threats required increased collaboration, information exchange and coordinated responses.

The Minister said the increasing use of technology in security-related activities also required security agencies to adopt modern technologies, build their operational capabilities and strengthen international partnerships.

He further highlighted the growing threat posed by illicit drugs and transnational organised crime, stressing the need for enhanced international cooperation and intelligence sharing to disrupt drug trafficking networks and other forms of organised crime.

Mr Idid expressed appreciation to the Minister for receiving him and his delegation, describing the relationship between the two countries as one founded on mutual respect, friendship and shared values.

He said Malaysia valued Ghana’s contribution to international security discussions and recognised the country’s important role in promoting peace and stability within the West African sub-region.

The Chargé d’Affaires expressed the hope that the partnership between Ghana and Malaysia would continue to grow, particularly in areas of mutual security interest.
