Ghana Armed Forces Breaks Ground for Major Housing Redevelopment Projects

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has commenced the redevelopment of key military accommodation facilities with the sod-cutting for three major infrastructure projects aimed at improving the welfare, living conditions and operational effectiveness of its personnel.
The projects comprise the redevelopment of Burma Camp–Medo Lines, El-Wak Barracks and the Ghana Armed Forces Post Office into a modern multi-use facility. The housing component will include two-bedroom and studio apartments to help reduce the accommodation deficit within the Armed Forces.
Speaking at the ground-breaking ceremony, the Deputy Minister for Defence, Mr Ernest Brogya Genfi, described the projects as a significant investment in the welfare of military personnel and a major step towards strengthening the country’s security architecture.
He noted that the facilities being redeveloped are not only military installations but also important landmarks in Ghana’s history.
Mr Genfi said improving accommodation for military personnel would enhance morale, boost retention and strengthen the operational readiness of the Ghana Armed Forces as it continues to respond to both national and international security responsibilities.
He stated that the redevelopment projects form part of President John Dramani Mahama’s Resetting Ghana Agenda and complement the Government’s ongoing 10,000 housing programme across military garrisons.
According to the Deputy Minister, providing decent and modern accommodation for personnel remains a key priority of the government in its efforts to build a resilient and professional Armed Forces capable of safeguarding national peace and security.
The General Officer Commanding (GOC) Support Services Brigade, Major General Glover Ashong Annan, said the redevelopment of Burma Camp would replace ageing colonial-era infrastructure with modern, resilient and sustainable residential facilities.
He described the project as a demonstration of the government’s commitment to improving the welfare of military personnel and expressed appreciation to the Military High Command, development partners and other stakeholders for their support towards the successful implementation of the initiative.
The redevelopment projects are expected to significantly improve accommodation standards within the Ghana Armed Forces while enhancing the well-being and operational efficiency of personnel.
