Ghana Maritime Authority Sensitises Jamestown Fisherfolk on Sea Safety
The Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) has sensitised artisanal fishers and maritime stakeholders in Jamestown on safety at sea and the protection of national maritime infrastructure.
The exercise was conducted by officials from the Authority’s Maritime Safety and Security Unit and Monitoring and Enforcement Unit during the swearing-in ceremony of newly installed Chief Fishermen.
The engagement provided an opportunity for the team to interact with members of the fishing community and discuss measures to improve safety during fishing activities.
The team noted the need for fishers to wear life jackets at all times while at sea to help reduce drowning incidents.
They also cautioned against fishing near critical maritime installations and busy port approaches due to the associated safety and legal risks.
The team further urged community members to remain vigilant and report illegal maritime activities, particularly unauthorised bunkering operations.
The Ghana Maritime Authority reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with coastal communities to promote safety at sea and protect Ghana’s blue economy.
